For a
long time I always felt that snoring was always a
disturbance to others while it was thought to be a
happiest one for the person sleeping. I am sure most of us
have felt the same. I realized that I was completely wrong
when I started realizing the disastrous effects of snoring
and also when it stops. In brief snoring occurs when our
upper respiratory system is blocked which means that he is
breathing whenever he is snoring and when he is not
snoring his breathing stops briefly. During this period of
sleep cessation lot of changes takes place in the body.
Like one can get heart attacks, cardiac anythmias and
cerebral strokes. High blood pressures also can also
result form this disturbed sleep.
I had a
patient Mr. S whose wife complained that he had a high
blood pressure and obesity. His wife that snoring was like
a grunt and during this sleep he would choke, gasp, snort,
gurgle and then would suddenly stop breathing and then
start all over again. She also said that he would toss,
turn and kick all the night. He would get up with all
signs of irritability. And in the day time he would feel
extremely sleepy and he would fall asleep even while
sitting, snore and wake up whenever he was just touched.
He injured during his sleepy bouts. He was a bank employee
and was suspended and reprimanded forderiliction of duty.
He could not drive the car for fear of sleeping during
driving.
His wife
being wiser and more realistic started looking interned
for sleep and disturbance and had looked at some of the
web sites including ours which simply confirmed her
suspicions. She even had an audio file of snoring down
loading from a site. Her husband reluctantly agreed for
overnight sleep study rather he was made to agree. His
sleep study showed severe obstructive apnoea. We told him
that he may have to go for an equipment when he sleeps he
did no quite like the idea and I don't think anyone would
like that idea. But we all convinced him and the rest is
history.
We fixed
him to a CP AP machine and right from the first day he
liked the machine because he had good sleep and did not
sleepy in the day time and above his wife was happy that
he did not snore and she had a good sleep after many
years. His snoring came down to acceptable levels and his
blood pressure started leveling of with reduction in the
dosage of antihypertensives. He could drive a two wheeler
and car rather he was allowed to by his wife.
The
reason I brought this story is make it clear that snoring
cannot brushed aside as a laughing or cartoonist matter
because proper identification can change the whole life
style of the person to a great extent in a positive
manner. It is to create the awareness on this simple
problem I had brought this out this editorial.
