CFC free Inhalers

The inhalers that are being used contain CFCs which are harmful to environment. By changing from these we will be protecting the environment. It will be ideal to discuss this with your doctor as this is safe both the patient and the environment.

During the 1970s a hole was noticed in the ozone layer over Antarcatica which was linked to chloroflurocarbons (CFCs). Cfcs were introduced in 1960s for use in air conditioners, refrigerators, cleaning solvents, hairsprays, deodorants and air freshners. Most of the countries have started banning the use of CFCs in these. Inhalers that use CFCs as propellants were exempted as they are life saving and the pharmaceuticals companies that make these inhalers were advised to change over gradually. But the time has come for a complete transition as the defect in ozone layer can cause various other diseases due to entry of ultra violet rays freely.

There are a lot of ozone friendly propellants which have been extensively and are now being used for inhalers. Most of the companies that make these inhalers are trying to maintain the shape as similar to the one used previously as possible. The shape may change and since the propellant used is different the flavour may change. The inhalation jet flow will be soft and warmer and one need not think that the drug is not entering.

Otherwise the technique is same, spacer can be used and whatever one is used can be tried. It will be better to ask your doctor next time when you visit whether you are getting a CFC free inhaler. Keep your self safe and the environment safe.
